I want to finally upgrade to a decent desktop, as opposed to my current laptop. My only requirements are that it should play games ( specifically GTA V with mods) with at least mid-range graphics, and it should cost no more than ~$600. I don’t need a strict gaming PC, but I don’t want a potato.

You might find what you want for cheap at second hand stores, or at least a big monitor.

That might be tough in that price range. There’s something like this out there, but it ain’t great, and being prebuilt it would be fairly safe to assume that the upgrade path is going to be limited.

I’d be more tempted to build something like above (with the disclaimer that I didn’t check the RAM against the board compatibility list, but MSI’s 400 series boards seem to have pretty broad Corsair support for speedy RAM) . That would be quality components that run pretty much anything at max settings at 1080p today and provide an upgrade path going forwa rd. You could probably pickup comparable used components on ebay and be within your budget pretty easily.

I would wait for the Zen 2 to come out this summer and everything last gen for cpus and motherboards should go down, but if you want it now (like, ordering it tonight) this is what I would do:

Get these:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboBundleDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.3903922&Description=3903922

Get this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16814487438

I don’t like cases with bells and whistles, so I would get this:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811147253

And something like this, but you might have to spend more:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=N82E16817371113

And then one of these, but 2 if you can stretch your budget:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820232419&Description=aegis&cm_re=aegis-_-20-232-419-_-Product

Everything in my cart comes to (before tax)

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

and that’s with 16GB of RAM. You’ll get 20 dollars back if you do the rebates, plus you’ll get The Division 2 for free when it’s out.

If you live near a Microcenter, that COMPLETELY changes this list.

That’s probably going to be tough, you can look at used and refurbished, or track stuff and hope to find a sale.

Something like this might be an ok, but certainly not great way to go (this is a third-party seller, I have no idea if they are reputable): https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA5968WG4801

This would be better, but then you’ve used your budget up with no screen: https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?item=9SIAC0F8155906

You might need to poke around on ebay, CL, etc. to find a good used deal. Otherwise you can check for refurbs on Amazon, Fry’s, Newegg, etc.

More generally what I’d recommend is:

Don’t worry too much about processor, any modernish i5, i7, Xenon, or Ryzen processor should be “good enough” (though ideally, you’d like to get one new enough to get meltdown fixes).

Get 16GB of RAM. Not worth dealing with 8. DDR3 vs. DDR4 doesn’t matter too much.

Get at least a 250GB SSD (or budget to buy one, they are pretty cheap these days). You don’t want an HDD as a primary drive, and a ~ 120GB will be a painful experience of running out of space all the time.

For video g et at least a 105 0/560, and if at all possible a 1060/570/580. You may find bargains on older high-end graphics, but there’s efficiency difference between the the 10XX/4XX/5XX generations and their predecessors.

look for i5 HP Z240 workstations on ebay, buy RAM + SSD + video card separately, can be done under $600 total
